Yuri I. Manin Yuri Ivanovich Manin—a great mathematician and an exceptional personality—is 70. Five years ago we dedicated three consecutive issues of the Moscow Mathematical Journal to him. This time we leave this honour to other publishers. It is a great pleasure for us to congratulate him on the occasion of his birthday. His impact on the whole of mathematics and on human culture in general cannot be overestimated. A powerful mind, a brilliant pen, an incomparable teacher, a magnificent lecturer, and a profound thinker—he deeply impresses everyone who is lucky enough to come into contact with him. The diversity of his interests is astounding: literature, linguistics, glotto-genesis, mythology, semiotics, history of culture, and philosophy of science, to say nothing of various parts of mathematics and theoretical physics. Many happy returns of the day!
